HSBC Global Digital
Transformation

The largest bank in Europe by total assets ($3.2 trillion), HSBC serves 41 million customers across 56 global markets and is the world leader in trade finance.

Overview

Global
Legacy-to-responsive redesign of HSBC's everyday banking platform: payments, transfers, loans, accounts, dashboards. The largest workstream in the programme
3+
Products designed: core online banking (primary), HSBC Expat, Neighbourhoods property app, and supporting component library
Atomic
Component library established as the design foundation adopted across the entire transformation programme
2014
Start of career in London. HSBC's largest-ever digital transformation programme at the time

My Role

Everyday Banking
The largest workstream: redesigning HSBC's core online banking from legacy to fully responsive. Payments, transfers, loan configurators, account dashboards, all built for desktop, tablet and mobile for the first time
HSBC Expat & More
Designed for HSBC Expat (international banking for expatriates) and contributed to additional product workstreams across the programme
Component Library
Atomic design approach: components built for reuse across every product in the programme, maintaining brand consistency under strict FCA guidelines across all global markets
Neighbourhoods App
One of several products: a property discovery app combining crime data, school ratings, transport links, mortgage calculator and live Zoopla listings

Projects

01 · Core Banking Platform (Primary)

Everyday Banking
Responsive Redesign

The largest workstream in the programme. I designed high-fidelity prototypes and UI systems to take HSBC's everyday banking platform from legacy desktop-only pages to a fully responsive experience across desktop, tablet and mobile. This covered the full breadth of everyday banking: payment and transfer flows, loan configurators, account dashboards, and supporting journeys. At the time, responsive banking at this scale was still rare among Tier 1 banks. The components I designed fed directly into the shared atomic library used across all products in the programme.

Legacy-to-responsive · Payments · Transfers · Loans · Account dashboards · All form factors · Global rollout
Global Reach: the same responsive components deployed across every HSBC market from day one
3 Form factors: desktop, tablet, and mobile designed in parallel, sharing the same atomic components
02 · International Banking

HSBC
Expat

Designed for HSBC Expat, the bank's international banking service for customers living and working abroad. The product had specific requirements around multi-currency accounts, international transfers, and tax-efficient savings, all within a regulatory context that differed from the core UK platform.

Expatriate banking · Multi-currency · International transfers
Expat A dedicated product for customers managing finances across borders and jurisdictions
03 · Property Discovery

HSBC
Neighbourhoods

One of several products designed during the programme. A property and neighbourhood discovery app combining crime and school data heat maps, live property listings from Zoopla, income and demographic data, social feeds, and an integrated mortgage calculator. A complex multi-source data product designed to feel simple and personal.

Crime · Schools · Transport · Property data · Mortgage calculator · Zoopla integration
5+ Data sources unified in one interface: crime, schools, transport, property prices, demographics, Zoopla listings
3 Platforms: native mobile, tablet dashboard, and onboarding flow, each with a distinct interaction model

Legacy to responsive
across every form factor

The core everyday banking platform redesigned from legacy desktop-only pages to a fully responsive experience. The same flows, from payments to account management, adapted across desktop, tablet and mobile for the first time at HSBC.

Neighbourhoods app
one of several products

While the core everyday banking redesign was the primary workstream, the Neighbourhoods app is shown here as a visual example of the product design work. It brought together crime data, school ratings, transport links, property prices, and a mortgage calculator in one onboarding-to-decision flow.

Recommendations for you
Screen 01 / 04
Onboarding: personalisation before data
The app opens with a question, not a map. Household type shapes every recommendation that follows: crime weighting, school proximity, transport patterns. The "skip" option preserves autonomy without breaking the flow.
Screen 02 / 04
Heat map: data made spatial
Crime, school quality and transport data rendered as a colour-coded heat map across the city. A sentiment bar translates the data into an immediately legible signal. Tapping any area surfaces that neighbourhood's profile.
Screen 03 / 04
Neighbourhood detail: housing tab
Property prices, 7-year trend charts, live Zoopla listings and demographics all within one scrollable view. The HSBC mortgage prompt appears contextually, not as an ad, but as a useful next step at the moment of highest intent.
Screen 04 / 04
Mortgage calculator: from data to decision
The calculator is pre-populated with the area's average price and the user's earlier income input. The three-step structure (details → calculator → recommendations) mirrors HSBC's mortgage application flow, intentionally priming the next stage.

From HSBC
to JPMorgan.

HSBC established the rigour that made everything else possible: redesigning everyday banking at global scale, from legacy desktop pages to fully responsive experiences, under compliance and brand constraints from day one. That discipline, built across the core banking platform, HSBC Expat, and the Neighbourhoods app, underlies a decade of progression to VP level at JPMorgan Chase.
